UNE Tertiary Literacy Assessment

Monday, 25 February 2008

The Academic Skills Office has launched the UNE Tertiary Literacy Assessment (TLA).

The TLA is a diagnostic device for students to voluntarily assess their strengths and weaknesses in four literacy strands:

· academic writing

· information literacy

· computer & internet literacy

· basic mathematical & statistical literacy

The TLA provides feedback to students about gaps in their skills base and refers them to the support services available.

Feedback from students so far has been very positive. For example:

“Fantastic system for detecting areas that challenge students! The help sections that we are directed to are very useful and user friendly. Thank you!”

“I found that TLA is a bit of a wake up call for how my skills are. I found the maths a bit awkward to start with as I have been out of school for 4yrs now. But, once started, it did come back. Very good testing strategies to make sure each individual student is ready or will receive the help needed for undergoing university study.”

“This is a great idea to help me to better understand what I need to focus on more in my studies. Cheers to you.”

If you would like to know more about the TLA please contact Robyn Muldoon on 02 67732836 or rmuldoon@une.edu.au .
